Janet Naidu was born in Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara. She has recently published Rainwater, a collection of poems which captures issues of migration, identity, struggle and memories of Guyana and beyond. Her first collection, Winged Heart, was short-listed for the Guyana Prize for Literature, Poetry category, in 2000. Some of the poems, Short Stories and Biographies were published in the Guyana Journal and elsewhere. Janet Naidu earned a BA in Political Science and Caribbean Studies at the University of Toronto. Janet has been living in Canada since 1975. She is the President of Pakaraima.

Richard Rupnarain was born in Guyana and currently resides in Toronto, Canada, with his wife Sandra and their two children. An accountant by trade, he enjoys writing short stories based on the lives of the Guyanese diaspora. A collection of his stories is soon to be published.

Jagdish R. Singh (Roy) was born June 29, 1953 in the town of Blenheim on the island of Leguan, Guyana. In 1977 he immigrated to Canada where he studied spiritual beliefs and ancient myths. Since then he has been actively writing fiction and non-fiction themes that are thoughtful and informative. He is the author of the visionary fiction novel The True Self, a collection of essays titled Earthly Tribulations and fourteen fictional stories under the title Pandora’s Heartaches. Roy is an Executive Member of Pakaraima.

Shirley Najhram was born in Georgetown, Guyana. She emigrated to London, England and after a few years came to Canada. Shirley is an Early Childhood Educator and a Family Life Educator. She is presently teaching Kindergarten children. Layers of The Rainforest, a story for children, is her first book and she is currently working on her second book. Shirley is the Secretary of Pakaraima.

Habeeb from Enmore Guyana, also known as Rafarz Alli, has written several works on poetry as well as spiritual journeys. Having studied at Queens College in Georgetown and in India, he has recently moved to Toronto as a World Religion Educator. Habeeb was born in 1969 and regards the Word as the most sacred link between God and humanity and must be maximized and articulated to get the best between humanity. As an Editor of a newspaper he sees this as the tool to the mind and heart both. Habeeb is an Executive Member of Pakaraima. His latest book Realities under the Stars is a tribute to love!

Roop Misir was born in Kingston, Leguan Island; but hails from Windsor Forest, Guyana. While serving as a Teacher, he obtained the BSc and a Dip Ed from the University of Guyana. In 1973 he came to study in Western Canada and earned the MSc (Manitoba) and a PhD (Alberta). He has published scientific papers. Presently a Teacher with the Toronto District School Board, he is the senior author of OAC Biology Workbook plus Teacher’s Guide (1996). Other published works include articles in newspapers and magazines, plus short stories and poems online in Canada, the Caribbean and India. Roop is an Executive Member of Pakaraima.

Hilary De Cambra
Hilary De Cambra was born on June 2, 1935 in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
He completed his Junior Cambridge Certificate and General Certificate of Education, graduating in 1953 from St. Stanislaus College, Georgetown.
He immigrated to Canada in June 1967 and in 1971 completed a Business Administration Certificate from Ryerson Polytechnic Institute (now University).
He is the past Editor and contributing writer for the St. Stanilaus College Alumni Association in Toronto.
Hilary has been writing poetry, essays and prose and became a member of the International Society of Poetrs. His love of writing is rooted in his belief that “The pen is mightier than the sword.”
He has retired from the City of Toronto (having worked there for 28 years).
He lives in Tamworth, Ontario with his family.
Peter Jailall
Peter Jailall, a teacher, storyteller, and poet, was born in Guyana in 1944. He has read his poetry in schools, libraries, and universities across Canada and in the Caribbean. An avid supporter of human rights and social justice, he expresses his compassion and passion for human values through poetry and stories. He currently teaches with the Peel Board of Education in Mississauga, Ontario, and writes a regular column, “Jottings,” in the Peel Educator’s Association newspaper, The Beacon.
